First United Methodist Church (First Church Knox) was the scene of four splendid piano, violin, viola and cello recitals on May 9 and 16. Some students made their debut performance, some were intermediates, and then more advanced students dazzled us with their poise, agility and artistry. From the beginner to the veteran of years of study, each person brought a unique voice and beauty to the performance. In the arts, there really are no winners and losers. Every musical voice is different, every voice matters! Recitals are marvelous celebrations of growth and unique moments of music-making.
Part of the genius of the Suzuki Method is the focus on the continuous building of a strong foundation of skills and repertoire. As students progress through the books with ever increasing challenges, the basic repertoire is maintained, as it can always be made more beautiful. Seeing all those stages of learning in one recital is a joy. Young ones are inspired, and older students are encouraging and supportive. That sense of community was palpable in these celebrations of music!
